Our district and specifically our school, continues to invest heavily in creating equitable access to career and life readiness tools and personnel in order to make meaning of why we do school. We are trying to shift mindsets by starting with a vision of a desired future and translate this vision into defined goals. During the week prior to Spring Break, our students were engaged in a College and Career Expo. During the first day, students had the honor of meeting with Mr. Rick Hollering, Youth Services Alliance and Mrs. Karin Combs, LHS Guidance to participate in goal setting, visioning and college and career readiness activities.
Our students then began by identifying three careers they were interested in by developing their profile on a newly adopted program in grades 6-12 called Naviance. Naviance works through six competencies within the College, Career and Life Readiness (CCLR) Framework. These six components are: Social and Emotional Learning, Interpersonal Skills, Academic Skills, Career Knowledge, College Knowledge and Transition Skills.
To address the students identified careers, patrons from the community were asked to present. Each presenter had a 30 minute session with 16 students. They brought artifacts and used multimedia to engage these young learners in their career. Each presenter was asked to talk about their experience with getting “life ready” and address the academic, interpersonal and emotional skills necessary for their jobs. Madeline Anderson, 6th grade student shared, “I thought it was interesting because they talked about things I was interested in doing like dental hygiene and medical imaging. I learned about their pathway through high school and college which helped me to know that life isn’t as easy as people say.”
A big thank you to all of the patrons who made this week such a big success!
