Schwa Day fun! Columbia Elementary celebrated National Schwa Day with a pajama day and schwa activities!
What is the schwa sound? It‘s a day to recognize and appreciate that schwa is a unique aspect of the pronunciation of some vowels in English. The schwa sound “uh” is found in an unstressed syllable. For example, the word "lemon" has a schwa sound ("uh") for the letter "o," so it is pronounced "lem-uhn." In the word April, the “i” says “uh,” and in the word eleven, the 2nd “e” says “uh.
Since the schwa sound is always found in an unstressed syllable, we wore pajamas and were "unstressed" for the day, too!
The teachers enjoyed some "lemon" snacks, and the students learned about schwa with some activities, including this YouTube video of a read-aloud of the book "The Not-So-Lazy Schwa" by the author, Yvette Manns.

From Mrs. Kuhn:
Mr. Z's 4th-grade class played $10 and Bone. They learned that you have to work a job (exercise), then you get paid. Once you get paid, you put the money in the bank. Once you have enough money saved up, you can buy things (bones). Once they bought the whole skeleton, they had to put it together as a team.
